Newsom Signs Bills Concerning Homelessness and Mental Health

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed two bills that will fund the reform of the state’s Mental Health Services Act. Speaking at the former General Hospital facility in Sacramento, Newsom said thousands of treatment beds will be created for outpatient care. General Hospital was shut down years ago and it will now be converted into a mental health treatment and recuperation village.  Other facilities will also be converted as part of the 5-year, 11-billion-dollar plan.  Newsom says it’s about time the state focused on brain health rather than tents for the homeless and incarceration for the drug-addicted.  The Governor also approved a measure that will appear on the state ballot. Proposition 1 will ask voters to approve a bond that will continue funding the state’s mental health services.
