October is a historically devastating month for wildfires in the North Bay. But experts with the Sonoma County Fire District and Cal Fire largely credit the record-breaking rainfall from this past winter for the reduced risk this year. Santa Rosa recorded 42 inches of rain during the previous water year. The storms have left fuels that were dry during three years of severe drought still moist during the later part of fire season. There were no major wildfires in Sonoma County the past two years.
