Napa Wineries Want Investigation Into Napa County Government

Three Napa County wineries want a federal and state civil rights investigation into the county government. Hoopes Vineyard, Smith-Madrone Vineyards & Winery and Summit Lake Vineyards will make a formal announcement this morning expanding on their case. They previously claimed the Napa County Government engaged in “a pattern and practice of discriminating against certain classes of small businesses.” It reportedly has to do with the Napa County’s Wine Definition Ordinance which has provisions to recognize wineries with use permits issued before 1990, as well as defined “small wineries.” It also requires all producers to apply for use permits before expanding their pre-ordinance levels.
