West Napa Fault More Dangerous Than Previously Thought

The San Andreas fault is the thing of legend, even the Hayward fault rings a bell for many people. But there is a lesser-known San Francisco Bay Area fault that is found to be longer and more dangerous than previously thought. The West Napa Fault follows the contours of the famous Napa Valley wine region. In 2014, the rift caused a six-point-oh quake which buckled roads, cracked foundations and resulted in one death. New USGS research shows the fault is about nine miles longer than geologists thought and is capable of producing a mammoth seven-point-oh shaker, according to the SF Chronicle. That would be 33-times stronger than the 2014 earthquake.
