Increased Job Vacancies in Sonoma County Government are Putting a Strain on Services

Vacancies are causing big trouble throughout Sonoma County government agencies. The Press Democrat reports that, in a six-month study, the county has struggled to recruit, train and retain the people necessary to fill the vacancies. This in turn is causing the county to struggle in providing essential service and needs of residents. County wide, the vacancy rate has risen to over 12-percent in 2023 from 9-percent in 2020. Sonoma County Health Services has been hit the hardest with a vacancy rate of over 21-percent. Several factors are at play with the rise in vacancies including post-pandemic work attitudes, burnout, and retirements.
