How taxing is it to live in the Golden State? WalletHub compared the 50 states based on the cost of three types of taxes — property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes — to determine which states had the highest tax burden. California ranks 5th on the list. The Golden State has the highest individual income tax at 4.87-percent. We were more middle of the road in terms of property, sales, and excise taxes.
Overall, New York has the highest overall tax burden, while Alaska has the lowest.
