Warmer weather is on its way and may be here to stay. That means lower humidity and drying vegetation. Cal Fire says now is the time to start creating a defensible space or clearing around your property.
“Get that grass cut down and cut short before it dries out and then the clearing that you do could become a fire hazard,” says Robert Foxworthy with Cal Fire.
Foxworthy says vegetation fires are often started by people accidentally with hot exhaust touching grass or mowers striking rocks and causing sparks. Be sure to remove all dead or dying vegetation as well. You should clear a total of 100 feet around your home. Hedges and bushes should be up to five feet away from the structure. Foxworthy says never leave stacks of wood or other flammable debris close to the home.
