Beware of contractor fraud. That’s the message from the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday along with the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) to recognize Contractor Fraud Awareness Week. The goal is to teach homeowners and business owners how to identify fraud and avoid becoming a victim, particularly after a natural disaster. NICB has several tips including assessing damage and how to determine what is covered by insurance, researching a contractor’s history and track record, insisting on written out contracts on work to be done, and avoiding upfront payments. You can learn more and report fraud at NICB.org.
