Man Pleads Guilty to Decapitating Grandmother in Santa Rosa

A Santa Rosa man pleaded guilty Tuesday to decapitating his grandmother last November in her home in Santa Rosa. Luis Aroyo-Lopez entered his plea before Sonoma County Judge Laura Passaglia as a dozen family members of the victim, Elvia Aroyo-Lopez, watched in the courtroom. He will be sentenced on June 27th, facing 26 years to life in prison. No information is available about what led to the killing or what led to Aroyo-Lopez taking a plea deal. He was supposed to have a preliminary hearing for the judge to decide if there was enough evidence to stand trial, but when the courtroom opened to the public it was announced by Judge Laura Passaglia that he would enter a guilty plea.
