Bay Area Chefs Come Up Short at James Beard Awards

Bay Area chefs and restaurants come up empty at the James Beard Foundation awards. Considered the Oscars of the food world, the awards were held on Monday at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Rogelio Garcia of Michelin-starred Auro in Calistoga was nominated for “Best Chef, California” along with several other Bay Area chefs. However, the award went to Lord Maynard Llera of Kuya Lord in Los Angeles. Chef John Ash was also nominated for his cookbook “The Hog Island Book of Fish & Seafood.” That award, though, went to Meryl Feinstein’s “Pasta Every Day: Make It, Shape It, Sauce It, Eat It.” The only winner this year from Sonoma County was Mai Nguyen, who won a leadership award from the Foundation for their farming and advocacy work in a ceremony on April 3rd.
