A new trial date has been set for the suspect in the Hopkins Fire that destroyed 30 homes near Ukiah back in September of 2021. The first trial of 23-year-old Devin Lamar Johnson for arson ended in a mistrial after a Marin County jury failed to reach a verdict. Jury selection for a new trial will begin on July 24th. Johnson remains behinds bars in the Marin County Jail. Johnson is accused of starting the Hopkins Fire that burned through the small, unincorporated community of Calpella before reaching a hillside bordering the Russian River and Lake Mendocino. In the trial last month, Johnson said the fire was an accident after he dropped a cigarette in dry vegetation.
