Two pending sales tax measures in Sonoma County could lead to a situation never seen before in California, should they both pass in November. Sonoma County’s Measure I proposes a quarter-cent sales tax increase expected to raise more than 30-million-dollars per year for local childcare and healthcare programs. Sebastopol’s Measure U proposes a half-cent sales tax increase for the city, which is expected to raise more than one-and-half-million-dollars annually. The state has a ten-point-two-five-percent sales tax cap for Sonoma County and its cities. If both measures pass, Sebastopol’s sales tax rate would go to ten-and-a-half-percent, exceeding the limit. The state Attorney General’s Office would be required to intervene if both sales tax measures pass.
