Sonoma County Supervisor James Gore is calling for officials to reexamine the sale of a historic cemetery in Santa Rosa. The one-and-a-half-acre Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery is on the old Sonoma County Hospital complex on Chanate Road. The old hospital property was sold to a Las Vegas-based developer in 2021. More than 15-hundred people, many of whom were Sonoma County’s earliest and poorest residents, are buried at the cemetery. Terms of the sale require the new owner to protect, preserve and provide permanent access to the cemetery in perpetuity. But, Gore says that has not happened, calling the deal a mistake. Thieves stole bronze plaques from the cemetery last year.
