The California Coastal Commission is denying the Air Force’s request for SpaceX to increase the number of rockets it can launch annually from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The decision lacks the force of law so the Air Force can decide unilaterally to proceed with the rocket launches. But the commission can still sue the Air Force over it. The Commission’s chair, Caryl Hart of Santa Rosa, argues that since the launches primarily benefit SpaceX rather than the federal government, SpaceX must appear before the commission and apply for a conditional development permit.
