Russian River Residents & Businesses Concerned With Recent FEMA Flood Maps

New flood maps released by FEMA are causing major concerns for residents and businesses along the lower Russian River in Sonoma County.

The updated maps significantly expand flood risk zones, impacting property values, insurance rates, and the ability to rebuild or expand. Many residents and business owners feel they were not adequately informed about the changes during the public comment period, leading to widespread frustration and calls for improved communication from county officials.

The county is now working to address these concerns, including exploring potential errors in the FEMA maps and developing strategies to mitigate the impact on the community. The Board of Supervisors will discuss the flood zoning approval and next steps at their meeting on January 14th.
