The Sebastopol City Council has finalized a new 15-year waste hauling contract with Sonoma County Resource Recovery (SCRR), despite opposition from some businesses and residents.
The 4-1 vote followed weeks of controversy, with some residents and businesses expressing concerns about the impact of the new contract, particularly on commercial rates. While residential garbage rates are expected to increase, commercial customers, especially those with high recycling and composting needs, may see significant cost increases.
The council defended the decision, citing lower long-term costs for residents and a more competitive bid from SCRR compared to the current provider, Recology. The new contract will take effect on July 1st.
