New NASA Study Shows Four Bay Area Cities Are Sinking

A new study led by NASA shows four cities along the San Francisco Bay are sinking.

The land in San Rafael, Corte Madera, Foster City and Bay Farm Island in Alameda is subsiding at a rate of more than four- tenths of an inch per year. Bay Farm Island is right next to the Oakland Airport.

The study was conducted using satellite radar to track more than a thousand miles of California’s coastline. Experts say the sinking land could have a major impact on the risk of flooding. NASA says the sea level in those four areas could rise more than 17 inches by 2050.

The regional estimate for the rest of the Bay Area is less than half of that, at seven-point-four inches.
