Petaluma City Council Approves Turf Replacement At Lucchesi Park

A heated debate has concluded in Petaluma, as the City Council voted 5-2 to replace the artificial turf field at Lucchesi Park with…more artificial turf. The decision followed nearly three and a half hours of discussion, public comment, and council questioning.

While environmental groups and some residents voiced concerns about the potential health and environmental impacts of synthetic turf, including so-called “forever chemicals,” many sports enthusiasts argued for its practicality and year-round usability. The council acknowledged the concerns, but cited the high cost and maintenance demands of natural grass fields, especially given the park’s heavy usage.

The new turf project is estimated to cost $1.72 million, with annual maintenance of just over $10,000. The council directed staff to explore less hazardous infill options and to implement water testing and signage regarding potential risks.
