SRFD Using Over 1,000 Goats To Clear Out Dry Grass And Weeds

This summer, the Santa Rosa Fire Department is deploying an unusual, but highly effective, fire prevention team: a herd of over 1,000 goats, and possibly some sheep!

According to the Press Democrat, these four-legged firefighters began work on June 8th, hired through two contractors, Goats R Us and CAPRA Environmental Services. Their mission is to munch through approximately 130 acres of dry grass and weeds across eight city sites. This “grazing team” is tackling areas that are tough for traditional equipment, like rocky terrain and steep slopes. As Assistant Fire Marshal Jared McDaniel explains, goats and sheep can easily navigate these challenging spots, clearing fuel more efficiently than any weed whacker.

The city is funding this eco-friendly initiative with $250,000 from a wildfire damage settlement with PG&E. Fire officials say this year’s extra rainy winter led to excessive plant growth, making the goats’ timing perfect for managing the increased fire risk.

Beyond just clearing brush, these goats offer additional benefits. They create natural firebreaks, control invasive species, and even fertilize the land, all without impacting air quality. It’s a natural, sustainable approach to fire safety that the Santa Rosa Fire Department hopes will make a significant difference this fire season.
