Proposed Federal Budget Cuts Could Affect Thousands of Sonoma County Families Who Rely On Food Programs

Thousands of Sonoma County families, including children, could lose vital support under proposed federal budget cuts to SNAP, or CalFresh.

According to a report from the Press Democrat, the House version of President Trump’s bill seeks to slash $295 billion from the program over a decade, a move food banks call the largest cut in a generation. Redwood Empire Food Bank CEO Allison Goodwin stresses that SNAP is our largest hunger relief program, providing essential support to over 41,000 local residents.

Beyond the immediate impact on families, these cuts could lead to substantial job losses and economic strain throughout the state.
