Amtrak Conductor Settles Federal Lawsuit In Connection With 2023 Christmas Day Shooting

An Amtrak conductor has settled a federal lawsuit filed in connection with an officer-involved shooting that left a man from Sonoma County dead.

Nicholas Detweiler was shot to death by a police officer on a stopped train on Christmas Day 2023. The conductor, Bruce Garrett, filed a federal lawsuit this past January, after he was hit by a police officer’s gunfire.

The settlement was reached last Friday, in U.S. District Court in Sacramento. It involves Garrett, Amtrak and the city of Mount Shasta, where the shooting took place.
