California To Hold Special Election For Redistricting

California will officially have a special election that could pave the way for redistricting.

On Thursday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation ordering a special election on November 4th. Voters will decide whether to allow lawmakers to temporarily take control of drawing the state’s congressional maps.

Newsom and fellow Democrats are trying to pick up five House seats in California, to counteract a similar effort by Republicans in Texas. The California proposal is officially called the Election Rigging Response Act.

If passed, it would override the authority of the state’s independent redistricting commission for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections.
