Sebastopol Vice Mayor Jill McLewis will get to retain her seat.
Dating back to early July, McLewis has missed nearly 50 days of council proceedings. She is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. On Tuesday, city officials held a special meeting to discuss whether she should be allowed to stay in office.
California law says elected officials must be granted permission to miss 60 days or more of regularly scheduled meetings. If not, they are required to resign from their seat.
McLewis’ four council colleagues ultimately decided to excuse her prior absences, allowing her to retain her seat.
