The St. Vincent de Paul Society is celebrating a major milestone for its new project, Gravenstein Commons, in Sebastopol.
After overcoming challenges with funding and permits, the organization was reminded of its purpose by two residents from a similar Santa Rosa project. The two shared how they went from being homeless to rebuilding their lives, crediting the organization with giving them a “second chance.”
The public is invited to the official groundbreaking ceremony for Gravenstein Commons today at noon, where the community will celebrate this historic step forward.
Meanwhile, the Sebastopol City Council has raised serious concerns about the housing project, citing issues at a similar facility, the council is worried about potential financial instability and public safety.
According to the Press Democrat, St. Vincent de Paul Executive Director Jack Tibbetts has promised a live-in manager, on-site security, and a strict “three-strikes” policy for residents. He also assured the council that the organization has the financial stability to complete the project, which is scheduled to open in May.
