SSU Loses Key Program Due To Cancelled Federal Grant

A key program at Sonoma State University aimed at increasing teacher diversity and addressing teacher shortages has been terminated by the federal government.

According to the Press Democrat, the $3.2 million EDUCA grant provided up to $12,000 in aid for low-income and minority students in SSU’s teacher residency program. The Trump administration’s Department of Education cancelled the grant after one year, citing the program’s focus on equity and diversity.

SSU officials say the financial aid was vital for students participating in full-time teaching residencies.

The university has committed to replacing the lost funds through the end of the spring semester to ensure current students can complete their credentials.
