New Housing Plan Revives Debate Around Santa Rosa Historic Site

A long-stalled housing proposal near Santa Rosa’s birthplace is being revived by a San Jose developer. The project, named Creekside Village, plans for 162 townhome-style units on a nearly 15-acre parcel on Montgomery Drive.

The Press Democrat reports the development site is adjacent to the Carrillo Adobe, a 188-year-old historic landmark. The developer, Barry Swenson Builders, says the plan aims to balance the need for new residences with the preservation of the adobe and the riparian area, which would be turned into a public park.

However, the new proposal is already drawing concern from local historians and descendants of the Carrillo family, who worry about encroachment on the fragile historic site. Neighbors also anticipate issues with increased density.

Community members can offer initial feedback on the preliminary plans at a neighborhood meeting this Monday at 5 p.m. at Santa Rosa City Hall.
