Narrows Project To Continue With Higher Costs

The long-awaited widening of Highway 101 between Marin and Sonoma is open, but drivers can expect more construction and a higher price tag this spring.

Per the Marin Independent Journal, while all lanes of the ‘Novato Narrows’ are now clear, Caltrans says unexpected site conditions and pavement alignment issues have added $2.5 million to the final phase’s cost. Crews still need to smooth out uneven road sections, finish drainage work, and complete ramp metering systems.

In addition to the construction, transportation officials are preparing to roll back the recently expanded carpool hours following a wave of driver complaints. A final decision on those new hours is expected next month. In the meantime, commuters should watch for intermittent day and night lane closures as the $108 million project nears its final wrap-up this spring.
