Seismologists Warn Bay Area Residents to Prepare Now for “The Big One”

Seismologists are issuing a stark reminder that a major earthquake isn’t just a possibility, but a certainty for the Bay Area, with a 72% chance of a magnitude 6.7 quake by 2043.

According to the Press Democrat, experts highlight the Rodgers Creek Fault, which runs directly under Santa Rosa, as the most likely flashpoint for a significant disaster. To prepare, residents are urged to secure heavy furniture, bolt homes to foundations, and sign up for the ShakeAlert early warning system.

Emergency officials recommend maintaining a seven-day supply of food and water, noting that local grants are available to help homeowners with seismic retrofitting costs. Because standard insurance doesn’t cover quakes, authorities also suggest looking into specialized policies to protect against structural loss and displacement.

The message from officials is clear: while we can’t predict exactly when the ground will shake, we can control how ready we are when it does.
