West County Residents to Practice Emergency Response in Evacuation Drill

Emergency officials are urging residents in the Hacienda and Rio Nido communities to gear up for a localized evacuation exercise this Saturday, April 25.

The drill, running from 9:00 a.m. to noon, is designed to help neighbors familiarize themselves with official routes and test the SoCoAlert notification system. Participants will be directed by hi-lo sirens to a temporary evacuation point at Sunset Beach River Park, where a resource fair will offer expert tips on home and pet safety.

Supervisor Lynda Hopkins emphasized that these practice runs are vital for ensuring everyone knows exactly what to do when a real disaster strikes. Residents must register by this Thursday to receive the exercise alerts and participate in the post-drill survey.

It’s a great opportunity to “know your zone” and help local agencies fine-tune their emergency response plans.
