Watchdog Director John Alden Departs for Marin County

John Alden, the director of Sonoma County’s law enforcement watchdog agency, IOLERO, is stepping down to take a similar oversight role in Marin County.

The Press Democrat reports since 2022, Alden has led the agency through a period of significant growth and legal battles over the investigative powers granted by Measure P.

While Sheriff Eddie Engram praised Alden for improving internal investigations, his tenure was marked by increasing friction with the Sheriff’s Office and deputy unions. Supporters of the agency call his departure a setback, citing a lack of vocal support from the Board of Supervisors during recent legal disputes.

Alden’s final day is set for May 20, as the county prepares to appoint an interim director to lead the office during this critical transition.
