Sonoma County is moving forward with plans for a new local compost facility and is inviting the community to weigh in.
The proposed site at 5200 Slusser Road would process up to 70,000 tons of green bin material annually, much of which is currently hauled outside the county for processing. Officials say a local facility would significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide high-quality compost for area farms and vineyards.
Residents can learn more and share feedback at two open-house meetings on Thursday, May 14th, and Saturday, May 16th, at Zero Waste Sonoma in Santa Rosa. Spanish interpretation will be provided as staff present details on modern odor and emission control systems.
No final decisions will be made until a full environmental review and further public input are completed.
