Fundraising for Sonoma County’s Second District supervisor race remains surprisingly low-key despite the major political shift it represents.
The Press Democrat reports for the first time in sixteen years, there is no incumbent in the contest to represent the south county, creating an open field of four candidates ahead of the June second election. Because long-time supervisor David Rabbitt decided not to run at the last minute, the shortened campaign timeline has left candidates with little time to raise major cash.
Cotati Mayor Sylvia Lemus leads the pack with nearly fifty-five thousand dollars raised, closely followed by Petaluma school board member Joanna Paun at roughly forty-six thousand dollars. Rancher John King and professional motorcycle racer Shelina Moreda trail significantly behind in fundraising.
Political experts note that with mail-in ballots already out, the relatively low-dollar race relies heavily on grassroots support to see who will secure a spot on the five-member board.
