Fourteen-term Congressman Mike Thompson is hitting the campaign trail hard as he faces what could be the stiffest primary election challenge of his career.
According to the Press Democrat, Thompson recently crisscrossed Sonoma County, showcasing his decades of legislative experience and hand-delivering over one million dollars in federal infrastructure funds to local officials.
However, California’s newly redrawn Fourth District is less heavily Democratic, emboldening political newcomer Eric Jones to mount a aggressive campaign. Jones, a former venture capitalist, has successfully matched the veteran lawmaker in fundraising while pouring over three hundred thousand dollars of his own wealth into the race.
With the June second primary election rapidly approaching, Thompson is leaning heavily into his grassroots everyman appeal to secure a spot in the November runoff.
