State Senator Bill Dodd is introducing a bill that would make it easier for convenience stores to sell canned cocktails. The bill, introduced by the senator from Napa earlier this month, would give convenience stores the green light to sell 16-ounce cans of distilled mixed spirits with ten-percent alcohol by volume or less. Several of those drink brands, like Cutwater and Zaddy’s, are already sold at grocery stores in the Bay Area. Those grocery stores have Type 21 Alcoholic Beverage Control licenses. Dodd’s office says those licenses are too expensive for most convenience stores, who instead carry Type 20 licenses. The bill would allow business with Type 20 ABC licenses to sell canned cocktails along with packaged beers and wines.
