Ban on Factory Farming May Appear on November Ballot for Sonoma County

A group of animal welfare activists is a step closer to getting an initiative to ban so-called factory farming in Sonoma County on the November ballot. On Monday, members of the Coalition to End Factory Farming delivered a tub full of signatures to the county’s Registrar of Voters. Enough valid signatures would qualify the initiative for the ballot. They’re hoping to put an end to medium and large-sized concentrated agricultural feeding operations. The coalition defines such an operation as one that stables or confines animals for 45 days or more in any 12-month period. As far as measuring compliance goes, the allowed farm size would vary by animal. Local agricultural operations dispute the coalition’s definition of a factory farm.
