Sonoma County’s official MLK-Juneteenth Festival is tomorrow from 10 to 6 PM at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Santa Rosa. The 54th annual celebration will feature public speakers, kids’ activities, arts and crafts, a basketball tournament, food, music and a performance by party band Pride & Joy. Texas-native Marteal Perry first started Juneteenth celebrations in Santa Rosa in 1954, a year after she moved to the city. Sonoma County’s MLK-Juneteenth Festival started in the early 1970’s after protesters successfully rallied against the City of Santa Rosa building a street through South Park. The park was renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Park in January of 1986.
