Signs of growth are emerging at some vineyards in Sonoma County. Several vineyards are reporting bud break, which is the beginning stage of new shoots and leaves on grape vines. The positive news for growers comes after a wetter and colder than normal winter that has left many vineyards flooded. The weather also delayed pruning. The owner of Balletto Vineyards in the Russian River Valley tells the Press Democrat about three to five percent of his vineyards are seeing bud break. John Balletto expects the process to speed up with a few days of warmer weather in the forecast.
