A man suspected of killing a high school classmate in Rohnert Park is asking a judge to charge him as an adult. Daniel Carrillo is now 23 years old, but was 16 at the time of the alleged murder in 2016. Carrillo made his request to a judge on Thursday, and the decision may come on October 23rd. Attorneys refused to comment on why Carrillo would seemingly invite a much more severe sentence in adult court. If he’s charged as a minor, he could benefit from a new law designed to emphasize rehabilitation over incarceration for youth offenders. The law, signed by Governor Newsom last year, retroactively applies to unresolved major crime cases involving juvenile offenders.
