A bill to help SMART extend its sales-tax revenue is clearing a state senate committee. Senate Bill 904 passed the Senate Elections committee yesterday after previously clearing the Senate Transportation committee. It heads next to the Senate Appropriations committee. If it ultimately passes, SB 904 would allow a future tax extension measure benefiting SMART to be filed by voters themselves, a tool already available to cities and counties. Once enough valid signatures are gathered, the voter-qualified ballot measures would be set for election and could be passed by a majority of those voting on the measure. This bill from State Senator Bill Dodd is a response to a failed 2020 tax extension measure that would’ve extended the quarter-cent sales tax for the SMART train beyond the 2029 expiration date.
