California is saying goodbye to those thicker plastic bags at checkout. Turns out, they’re nearly impossible to recycle and facilities won’t take them. The goal was to reduce plastic waste when the state became the first in the nation to ban the thinner bags in 2014. Since that didn’t work, a new bill was introduced to get rid of them and Governor Newsom signed it yesterday. By 2026, shoppers will need to use a paper bag or bring their own.
