Scientists are keeping a close watch on Mount Konocti, a volcano about 90 miles from San Francisco.
The site has an active magma chamber and geothermal system, giving it a “high threat” ranking. Researchers factor in eruption history, volcano type, and nearby population when assessing risk. While other California volcanoes like Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak are also high-risk, Mount Konocti poses a particular concern due to the large population and critical infrastructure around Clear Lake.
Scientists are monitoring ground shifts and gas emissions, though the volcano has been dormant for eleven-thousand years.
