SRCS Votes To Explore Parcel Tax & Sell Three Closed School Campuses

The Santa Rosa City Schools board is taking drastic steps to prevent a state financial takeover, which threatens the district.

Facing a budget shortfall of up to $15 million, the board voted Wednesday to explore a parcel tax—a new levy on property owners that requires a supermajority of voter approval. Additionally, the board approved salary cuts for top administrators and moved forward with plans to sell at least three closed school campuses for revenue.

The Press Democrat reports the financial crisis stems from years of declining student enrollment and rising costs. Union leaders criticized the cuts, urging the district to focus more on administrative reductions before further impacting staff who work directly with students.
