Sonoma Water Declares Dry Conditions as Rainfall Levels Dip

Despite rain in this week’s forecast, Sonoma Water has officially declared “dry water conditions” for the upper Russian River watershed following a historically parched March.

According to the Press Democrat, the declaration allows officials to scale back water releases from Lake Mendocino to ensure there is enough supply to last through the summer and into next year. While the region isn’t facing the severe drought levels seen in 2022, Lake Mendocino is currently at just 81% capacity—significantly lower than this time last year.

Fortunately, Lake Sonoma remains nearly full, and officials say river flows will stay adequate for recreation without the need for mandatory water cuts. However, with a milder winter and record spring heat accelerating drying, water managers are urging residents to stay mindful of water efficiency.

This move serves as a proactive step to protect the region’s self-contained water system before the dry season truly takes hold.
