The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety cracked down on underage riders this month, issuing 31 citations to minors during a targeted traffic enforcement operation on May 5th.
The Press Democrat reports officials launched the crackdown due to growing community concerns over near-misses, lack of helmets, and a rising number of teen injuries and hospitalizations linked to the popular alternative transit.
Out of the total citations, 27 were for e-scooter violations—primarily involving minors riding without a required helmet, learner’s permit, or driver’s license—while four involved standard and electric bicycles. Local authorities emphasized that this operation aligns with a county-wide push to regulate battery-powered transit as more students adopt the vehicles.
Minors caught violating these California Vehicle Code laws now face steep fines ranging from $200 to $400, alongside a mandatory appearance in juvenile traffic court.
