Congressman and Sonoma County Superintendent Speak Out Over Nashville School Shooting

A pair of North Bay officials are speaking out following the devastating shooting in Nashville, Tennessee. Congressman Mike Thompson of St. Helena expressed his condolences and once again called for universal background checks. In a statement, Thompson said “It does not have to be like this, we can act and pass legislation to save lives.” Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Amie Carter expressed similar feelings in a letter, saying “America is a great nation, but it’s the only country in the world where these shootings happen so frequently, and we owe it to our children to fix it.” Three elementary school children and three adults died in the shooting at The Covenant Presbyterian School in Nashville. The United States has faced at least 128 mass shootings so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. There have been more mass shootings than days in 2023.
