California Legislature Passes $312-Billion State Budget

Democrats in the California state legislature are pushing through their budget proposal just in time to keep getting paid. The plan approved in both the Assembly and Senate meets a constitutional deadline of Thursday at midnight. The spending plan is similar to the revisions proposed by Governor Gavin Newsom in May. It includes more money for education, health care and flood protection. Some cuts to programs and benefits will likely still need to be hammered out as the state faces a revenue short-fall for the first time in nearly a decade. GOP leaders in both houses say the plan passed by Democrats relies on gimmicks and borrowing to “continue spending like there’s no tomorrow.” Assembly Republican leader James Gallagher said in a statement that “Californians deserve a real budget that controls spending.”
