The Good Stuff – Stubbs Vineyard

In this episode of The Good Stuff presented by the Sonoma County Winegrowers, hosts Virginie Boone and Karissa Kruse talk with Tom & Mary Stubbs, Co-Owners of Stubbs Vineyard.

About Mary and Tom

Tom and Mary Stubbs are the visionary husband-and-wife team behind Stubbs Vineyard, a distinctive off-the-grid winegrowing estate set in the rolling hills of West Marin. After purchasing the original 1,200 acres in the early 1980s, they committed themselves to preserving open space, protecting local agriculture, and raising their family in a rural environment deeply connected to the land. Tom, an English-born real estate developer known for transformative Bay Area projects like Hamilton Air Force Base and One Market, brought the long-term land-use insight that helped ground the ranch in agricultural conservation, including becoming one of Marin Agricultural Land Trust’s earliest easement holders. Mary, a former journalist, helped shape the ranch into a working farm and vineyard, championing sustainable farming and hands-on viticulture long before it became commonplace. Together, they created a home and business rooted in stewardship, innovation, and a profound respect for the agricultural heritage of both Marin and Sonoma counties.

About Stubbs Vineyard

Stubbs Vineyard is a family-run, sustainably farmed estate in West Marin, producing cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reflect the unique terroir of the Petaluma Gap. Planted in 1996 and entirely powered by solar, wind, and natural spring water, the vineyard was Marin County’s first organically certified site and continues to be farmed with the same meticulous, soil-first philosophy. With long hang times, fog-cooled mornings, and hand-crafted farming practices, Stubbs’ fruit delivers exceptional acidity, complexity, and depth—crafted in partnership with winemaker Dan Goldfield. The ranch’s eclectic charm and agricultural authenticity make Stubbs Vineyard both a regional landmark and a testament to the potential of thoughtful, sustainable winegrowing on the Marin–Sonoma coastal edge.

The Good Stuff – Garden Creek Vineyards

In this episode of The Good Stuff presented by the Sonoma County Winegrowers, hosts Virginie Boone and Karissa Kruse talk to Justin & Karin Warnelius-Miller, Proprietors, Winemakers, & Winegrowers at Garden Creek Vineyards.

About Karin Warnelius-Miller

Born in Sweden and raised in Alexander Valley after her family immigrated in the 1970s, Karin grew up immersed in the hands-on work of vineyard farming at Viking Ranch and Wärnelius Vineyards, where her father apprenticed under Garden Creek founder James Miller. From an early age she learned the realities of agriculture, the rhythms of seasonal work, and the pride of cultivating land. Her passion for wine, business, craftsmanship, and design led her to degrees in International Business and Graphic Design, followed by winemaking and marketing roles in Sweden, Napa, and Sonoma County—experiences that shaped her into both a creative and strategic force within the wine industry.

In 2001, Karin and her husband, Justin, began making wine at Garden Creek, building every part of the estate winery themselves—from the farming program to the brand’s artistic identity. As co-winemaker, farmer, and host, Karin blends old-world sensibilities with an innovative, detail-driven approach rooted in sustainability and family tradition. Today they are raising the next generation on their Alexander Valley ranch while expanding their winemaking story into Anderson Valley.

About Justin Warnelius – Miller

Justin Warnelius-Miller is a lifelong Sonoma County winegrower raised on Garden Creek Ranch in Alexander Valley, where his father was among the first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in the region in 1969. Immersed early in the world of viticulture, biodiversity, and hillside farming, Justin studied viticulture, enology, and economics at UC Davis and Sonoma State before returning at age 19 to take over vineyard operations. His hands-on approach and commitment to sustainability have shaped Garden Creek into one of Sonoma County’s benchmark vineyards, recognized for regenerative farming practices, meticulous vineyard care, and an understanding of the land rooted in decades of observation.

Alongside his wife and partner, Karin, Justin produces limited, estate-grown wines under the Garden Creek label and continues to deepen their family’s connection to both Alexander Valley and their new venture in Anderson Valley. Known for his thoughtful approach to farming, his belief in the interdependence of land and wine, and his active role in local water and land stewardship efforts, Justin brings a perspective shaped by six decades of family farming and a lifetime spent in the vineyard.

About Garden Creek Vineyards

Garden Creek Winery is a multigenerational winegrowing estate deeply rooted in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley, where both Justin and Karin Warnelius-Miller grew up farming the land that would shape their lives. Justin, a sixth-generation Californian, was raised on the Garden Creek Ranch his father purchased in 1963—a bare stretch of valley floor that evolved from a working cattle ranch into one of the region’s early Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. Karin immigrated from Sweden in the 1970s, where her family cultivated their own vineyards just up the road; her father apprenticed under Justin’s, beginning a friendship and agricultural lineage that would eventually bring the two families together. Today, Justin and Karin continue that shared legacy as farmers and co-winemakers, stewarding their hillside vineyards through sustainable and regenerative practices while raising the next generation on the ranch. Since 2001, they have crafted wines entirely by hand from their estate vines, honoring the heritage, courage, and hard-earned resilience that built both of their families’ American winegrowing stories. Garden Creek remains, above all, a family place—shaped by history, defined by the land, and carried forward by a commitment to thoughtful farming and articulate winemaking.
