In this episode of The Good Stuff presented by the Sonoma County Winegrowers, hosts Virginie Boone and Karissa Kruse talk to Parke Hafner, Winemaker/Ranch Manager at Hafner Vineyard, and Scott Hafner, Partner at Hafner Vineyard (Sales & Marketing).

About Parke Hafner

Parke grew up in Berkeley. After graduating from the world-famous enology department at the University of California in Davis, winemaker Parke Hafner worked at wineries in the Napa Valley and Burgundy region of France. He then directed the building of the Hafner Vineyards current winery, and since 1982 has made all vintages of Hafner Vineyard wines. In addition, Parke oversees grape growing for Hafner Vineyards’ 96-acre vineyard, uses weekends for cycling, is a gourmet cook, skilled furniture maker and a leader in supporting community activities, particularly in his active role with the Boys and Girls Club.

About Scott Hafner

Scott Hafner leads a talented team that ensures the financial strength and marketing success of Hafner Vineyard. He brought Hafner wine to the market beginning in 1984 and created a patron-focused direct to consumer sales model built on his experience at The Sharper Image, Louis M. Martini Winery and in fine food retailing. The best part of his job? The rich relationships Hafner Vineyard has with its patrons, sometimes spanning several decades, and several generations of patron families. A leader in community service, Scott currently chairs the board of directors of Sonoma Land Trust and has served on the boards of Connecticut College, Pacific School of Religion, Horizons Foundation among others. He and his husband, Bill Glenn, live in rural Santa Rosa.

Founded in 1967 by Dick and Mary Hafner, Hafner Vineyard is a three-generation family winery nestled in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley. What began as a humble prune and pear farm has evolved into a thriving estate dedicated to crafting high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay exclusively from their own vineyard.  Clear Leaves & Debris

  • Why it matters: Falling leaves, branches, and pine needles can collect on your roof and trap moisture. This accelerates wear and can lead to moss or algae growth.

  • Tip: Use a roof rake or hire a professional to safely clear debris without damaging shingles.

Gutter Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Why it matters: Gutters are your roof’s drainage system. When clogged with leaves and debris, water can back up under shingles, freeze, and cause ice dams or leaks. Overflowing gutters can also damage siding, fascia boards, and even your home’s foundation.

  • Tip:

    • Clean gutters at least twice in the fall (early and late).

    • Check that downspouts are clear and direct water at least 3–4 feet away from the foundation.

    • Consider installing gutter guards if trees are nearby.

    • Trim back trees and bushes away from roof and gutters

 Attic & Interior Check

  • Why it matters: Leaks often show up inside first. Dark spots, damp insulation, or musty smells can mean water intrusion.

  • Tip: Check your attic after the first heavy rain. Look for signs of leaks, water stains, or sagging wood.

Schedule a Professional Inspection

  • Why it matters: A licensed roofer can spot small issues before they become costly repairs in winter.

  • Tip: Schedule a fall inspection to ensure your roof is ready to handle storms, wind, and freezing temperatures. $450 but if you call and say Raise the Roof, it’s free.
