The Good Stuff – Larson Family Winery

In this episode of The Good Stuff presented by the Sonoma County Winegrowers, hosts Virginie Boone and Karissa Kruse talk to Hayden Puryear, DTC Manager of Larson Family Winery & Erica Larson, COO of Larson Family Winery.

Hayden was born and raised in Gallatin, Tennessee. He met his wife Erica Larson in Nashville in 2017, and moved to Sonoma in 2021 where he worked in production and as a tasting room associate. After a tasting room fire in March 2022, Hayden took over as the tasting room manager. He loves the days he spends in the tasting room, meeting new people and making connections with our guests. On his days off, you can find him playing golf or watching the Tennessee Vols game with a glass of Larson Pinot Grigio in his hand!

Erica Larson is the COO of Larson Family Winery and Ultima Mobile Bottling. Her family has been farming in Sonoma since 1877, and on Millerick Road—where Larson Family Winery now sits—since 1899. She grew up at the family winery and today carries on its legacy while also leading one of Northern California’s most trusted mobile bottling companies. Erica is passionate about Sonoma’s wine community and creating authentic connections through wine.

About Larson Family Winery

Located in the heart of Sonoma Valley’s Carneros region, Larson Family Winery is a true family-owned and operated estate with five generations rooted in the land. What began as a dairy farm and later the site of Northern California’s largest rodeo has grown into a thriving winery, where the family planted their first vineyard in 1978 and opened the winery in 1985. True to their motto—“We drink what we can, and sell the rest!”—the Larsons craft 5,000 cases annually, sold exclusively at the winery, through their wine club, and online.

Farming 100 acres of sustainably and organically grown vineyards, the family works side by side in every aspect of the business, from vineyard operations and winemaking to hospitality. Their mission is simple yet heartfelt: to make great memories, from grape to glass. Guests are also greeted by the winery’s beloved wine dogs—Rosko, Louie, Gus, and Rocky—who embody the welcoming, family-first spirit that defines Larson Family Winery.

And finally, Virginie and Karissa share their Tuesday Night wine picks!

The Good Stuff – Hamel Family Wines

In this episode of The Good Stuff presented by the Sonoma County Winegrowers, hosts Virginie Boone and Karissa Kruse talk to John Hamel, Winegrower/Winemaker of Hamel Family Wines.

Director of Winegrowing since the 2017 vintage, John oversees all farming, winemaking, and production operations at Hamel. He is committed to producing wines that reflect the character of the terroir. John came to wine with a passion for organic farming and also a deep connection with the philosophies and practices of the Slow Food movement—both have informed his winegrowing approach. John and his team apply a micro-terroir-based winegrowing approach in which the vineyard and winemaking practices are adapted specifically to the volcanic soils across Hamel’s vineyards. In addition, John has led the transition of the majority of the vineyards to dry farming and has instituted organic and biodynamic vineyard management practices.

Hamel Family Wines

Founded in 2014, Hamel is a family-owned winery that produces estate-grown wines from certified biodynamic and organic vineyards on the western hillsides of the Mayacamas Mountains in the Moon Mountain District and Sonoma Valley. Today, John Hamel leads winemaking and viticulture, and he has spearheaded Hamel’s work in innovative, sustainable growing practices since 2017. He and his team transitioned the vineyard to dry farming and instituted biodynamic and organic vineyard practices at Hamel. The team has embraced a micro-terroir-based winegrowing approach, tailoring vineyard and winemaking practices to the unique volcanic terroir of the hillside vineyards. This method was developed over a decade-long collaboration with renowned terroir consultant Pedro Parra. Throughout the winery, Hamel is committed to sustainability, stewardship, and forward-thinking innovation.
