3 Things to Watch Out for With Fly-By-Night or Out-of-Area Roofers
After 30 years in the roofing industry, one thing I’ve learned is this: a roof is too important to trust to someone who may not be here next month. Homeowners should be very cautious when hiring someone they don’t know, especially if the contractor is from out of the area or offering a deal that sounds too good to be true.
Watch out for contractors who cannot provide a clear written proposal.
- Reputable roofer should have detailed estimate
- Warranty period
- Legal language required by licensed board like rights to cancel
- If vague or handwritten-major red flag
- Always verify the contractor’s license and insurance.

- Are they licensed for the work they are quoting-Under-licensed
- Roofer C-39 Gutters C61/D24 or C43-but most roofers do not have this license
- License verified if there are pending litigation, workers comp cancelled or inactive
- Don’t choose a roofer based on price alone.
- A cheap roof can be the most expensive roofing you ever buy
- Many times low bids are leaving out important details or using inferior materials
- Low bids many times skip steps that you would never know about-OVERLAY
- Low bids many times are not using employees to do the work or paying under the table-NO W/C
- Bid $60,000 and one for $30,000 do some additional research.
Your roof protects everything underneath it ,your home, your family, your belongings, and your peace of mind. Before you sign a contract, slow down, ask questions, verify the contractor, and make sure the person working on your roof will still be around when you need them.
